Transport

In this lesson students talk about transport and how they get to and from school. They also practice using the prepositionsby” and “on” to say how they travel.

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

Learn the names of transport

Use means of transport with the correct preposition

Read a text about how students get to school in different countries

Write about your country and how you get to school

1. Review food and prepositions

Students review the previous lesson.

Review a: Chorus the food items paying special attention to stress. Students then play a guessing game using the vocabulary.

Review b: Chorus the preposition phrases. Then have students in pairs ask and answer questions about things in the classroom.

2. Transport vocabulary

1a: Elicit / Teach the transport items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.

1b: Students check their answers. They then play a drawing game to review the words on the page.

1c: As a final practice, students match up the halves of transport words. Have them do this in pairs.

3. Grammar – prepositions for travel

1d: Chorus the prepositions phrases and sentences. Then have students say how they get to school with the prepositions “by” or “on”. Write them on the board.

4. Reading and writing – getting to school

2a: Reading: Have students read the text in pairs, filling on the missing prepositions as they go.

Then have them check their answers on the next page.

2b: Writing: Have students, in small groups, brainstorm different ways children in their country go to school. Then explain the use of the adverbs “usually”, “sometimes” and rarely. Have your students match their transport with adverbs for true statements.

Now have your students write a short text based on the model text. Finally, have everyone read their texts to the class.
