Prepositions of place and shopping
In this lesson students talk about shopping in the supermarket. They learn words and phrases for food and shopping and practice using the prepositions “on“, “in“, “under“, “in front of“, “to the left/right” and “behind“.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Reviewing the names of food, saying where things are using prepositions of place, describing what there is around you in a supermarket.
Structures: “Where is the cat?“, “It’s behind the box”, “What is behind you?”.
Key vocabulary: [hide_on_uk]yogurt[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]yoghurt[/hide_on_us], garlic, milk, rice, butter, orange, banana, watermelon, cheese, grapes, pasta, lettuce, apple, egg, fish, potato, fruit, meat, vegetables, cornflakes, cart, basket, in front of, behind, to the right/left.
Grammar focus:
– Using prepositions of place to ask and say where things are in a supermarket.
Your students will need:

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. 1. Review furniture, toys and prepositions
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the furniture and toys items paying special attention to stress. Students then play a guessing game using the vocabulary.
Review b: Chorus the preposition phrases. Then have students in pairs ask and answer questions about things in their bedroom.
2. Food vocabulary
1a: Elicit / Teach the food items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to solve the crossword puzzle.
3. Grammar – prepositions of place
1b: Chorus the prepositions phrases. Then have students make sentences about items in the classroom with the prepositions “on”, “in”, “under”, in front of, “to the left/right of” and “behind”. Write them on the board.
4. Reading – supermarket shopping conversation
2a: Have students read the [hide_on_uk]dialog[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]dialogue[/hide_on_us] in pairs, one student taking the role of Sophia and the other, Maggie. Then have them change roles and read the [hide_on_uk]dialog[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]dialogue[/hide_on_us] again.
Then, as a class, discuss the task, “Say which food Sophia and Maggie bought”.
2b: Have students, in pairs, read and discuss the answers to the multiple-choice questions. Then, check the answers as a class.
5. Speaking – supermarket food and prepositions
2c: This page puts everything from the lesson together. Students work in pairs, one choosing a person in the picture and the other trying to guess who that person is by asking questions using food and prepositions vocabulary.
Have them keep switching roles until they have used up all the people in the picture.
