Describing the weather
In this lesson students learn to describe different weather conditions. They talk about the weather and the temperature, read a poem and make a weather poster. They also read a text about the climate in Canada.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Describing different weather conditions, saying temperatures, making a weather poster, reading and writing about the climate in different seasons.
Structures: “What weather do you like?”, “What’s the weather like today?”, “How’s the weather?”, “What’s it like in (London)?”, “It’s (warm and sunny) today”.
Key vocabulary: rain(y), wind(y), snow(y), sun(ny), cloud(y), mist(y), hot, warm, cool, cold, boiling, chilly, freezing, flower, butterfly, hill, tree, umbrella, leaf, kite, sky, snowflake, star, winter, spring, summer, autumn.
Grammar focus:
– Nouns vs adjectives for weather conditions (e.g. rain vs rainy).
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review family vocabulary, verb “to be”
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the family vocabulary paying special attention to the pronunciation note.
Review b: Chorus the sentences. Then have pairs write sentences about the family on the page and their own family.
2. Weather, temperature, weather poem
1a: Have students match the weather vocabulary to the pictures. Students discuss the weather they like. You can also lead a discussion on the common weather conditions in the students’ countries/regions.
1b: Have students put the temperature words on the thermometer and ask questions about the temperature. Again, discuss on the temperature ranges in your students’ countries/regions.
1c: After practicing the dialog, have students create their own conversations.
1d: This is a really poem. Read through as a class, pointing out the pictures that match some of the vocabulary in the poem. Then have students read the poem to each other.
3. Weather poster
2a: Students make their own weather posters by following the instructions. Then each student can show their poster to the class. Ask questions about the different conditions on the posters.
4. Reading and writing about local seasonal climate
3a: Have students in pairs read through the text about the climate in Canada, taking it in turns to read each sentence. Then have them underline the weather, temperature and seasons words (different [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us] for each).
Finally, have students write a similar text about their country or region. Have students read their texts to the class.
