School subjects and timetables

In this lesson students talk about the school subjects they study. They also practice saying the time and the days of the week. They finish by reading about and writing a school timetable.

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review weather vocabulary and structures

Students review the previous lesson.

Review a: Chorus the weather vocabulary paying special attention to the underlines stress. Finish with the drawing quiz.

Review b: Chorus the sentences. Then have pairs ask and answer the questions to talk about the current weather.

2. Days, dates and times of the day

This section of the lesson prepares students for the school timetable section of the lesson.

1a: First, see if you can elicit the days vocabulary and write them on the board. Chorus the days paying attention to word stress. Then run through the questions, first in pairs, then as a class.

1b: Show a clock in your classroom and elicit the time. Then have students draw the clock and write the time in their notebooks. Finally, have students draw clocks showing the different times.

3. School subjects

2a: Start by eliciting school subjects and writing them on the board. Then look at the page and chorus the subjects. Have students match the subjects to the course books.

2b: Have students work in pairs to write the subjects in order from [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] to least [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us].

4. School timetable – reading and writing

3a: Students read the text about a student’s timetable and write the subjects and times on the blank timetable. Then check the answers on the next page.

3b: Point out that the verb “have” is used when saying when explaining timetables. Have students say sentences about the timetable on the page using the structure. Finally, have students write down their own school timetables and then compare with other students using the structure with “have”.
