Talking about family members
In this lesson students talk about their families. They learn vocabulary for different family members, read about a family in the US and write about their own family. They also practice using using the verb “to be” to say who family members are.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Say the names of family members, use ‘to be’ in the present tense, read about a family, talk and write about your family.
Structures: “She’s Mark’s sister”, “Meet my family”.
Key vocabulary: father, mother, son. daughter, brother, sister, grandfather, grandmother, parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, cousin, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, husband, wife.
Grammar focus:
– “to be” present simple for family relationships (e.g. I’m, she’s, etc.)
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review bedroom vocabulary, pronouns
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the bedroom vocabulary then have students describe their bedrooms in pairs.
Review b: Chorus the pronouns table. Then have pairs describe their family members’ bedrooms.
2. Family vocabulary, verb “to be”
1a: Chorus the family vocabulary and go through the relationships.
1b: Chorus the names of the family members. Have students talk about the relationships in this family.
1c: Chorus the sentences and table, focusing on the pronunciation of the contracted forms. Then have students draw a picture of the family on the previous page and write sentences using these forms.
3. More family vocabulary
2a: Go through the explanation at the top of the page and then chorus the new family members vocabulary. Have students in pairs discuss the true / false questions. You can extend this by having students draw a picture of their family (or show on their phones) and say who is who.
4. Reading and writing about family
2b: Have students in pairs read through the text, taking it in turns to read each sentence. Then have them underline the family words.
2c: Have students correct the mistakes without looking at the text. Finally, check as a class.
2d: Have students make notes about their family and then write a short text introducing their family. Have everyone read their texts to their class.
