Adjectives for describing clothes
In this lesson students practice using adjectives to describe the clothes they are wearing. They read a text about the problem of choosing what to wear and write a descriptive text about the clothes in their [hide_on_uk]closet[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]wardrobe[/hide_on_us].

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Describing clothes with adjectives, using opposite adjectives, writing about different clothes.
Structures: “The small T-shirt is very comfortable”, “I like it very much.”
Key vocabulary: big, small, clean, dirty, warm, cold, long, short, new, old, bright, dark.

Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review costume vocabulary and present continuous
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the costume items paying special attention to stress. Students then play a guessing game in pairs using the vocabulary items.
Review b: Chorus the grammar table and have pairs test each other on it. Then have students make sentences about what their classmates are wearing.
Review c: Students play a simple game by describing what the people in the grid are wearing / holding / doing.
2. Adjectives vocabulary
1a: Elicit / Teach the items from the pictures and have students guess what the adjective could be from the adjective list (e.g. a long snake).
1b: Students check their answers. Then students, in pairs, write the opposites of the adjectives.
3. Reading – choosing clothes and using adjectives
2a: Chorus the adjectives. Then have students read the text and fill in the missing words.
Students check their answers. Then, in pairs, have them read the text to each other – but have the listening student say the adjectives.
2b In pairs, students read then sentences about the text and decide if they are true or false. They should correct the false sentences to make them true.
Finally, have them check their answers.
4. Writing – describing clothes
2c: Read the instructions as a class. Everyone should draw a picture of a [hide_on_uk]closet[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]wardrobe[/hide_on_us] with various clothing items in. They should also [hide_on_uk]color[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colour[/hide_on_us] it in. Then label the picture with the clothing words.
Students then give their pictures to another classmate. Then everybody writes a descriptive text about the clothing items using the model to help them.
Finally, everyone reads out their text to the class.
