Dishes from around the world
In this lesson students explore different cuisines from around the world. They read about dishes from different countries and write about their own country’s food.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Discussing food categories, reading and writing about dishes from around the world.
Structures: “Egg is a dairy, isn’t it?”, “(India) is famous for (curry)”, “(Italian) people eat a lot of (pasta)”.
Key vocabulary: dairy, egg, asparagus, spice, herb, starter, main meal, dessert, popular, traditional, ingredients.
Grammar focus:
– Using tag questions with “to be” (Egg is a dairy, isn’t it?).
– Using articles (a/an, the) for countable and uncountable nouns
– Using plural “s” with countable nouns (six apples).
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review food and drink, articles and plurals
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the food and drink vocabulary. Students then find the words in the grid and check their answers on the back page.
Review b: Chorus the vocabulary paying attention to stress. Students then work in pairs to put the items into categories and add more items to their category lists. Finally, collect answers from the class.
Review c: Chorus the vocabulary on the shopping list. Students match the words to the pictures and say which item is missing – check the answer on the back page.
Review d: Read through the grammar rules as a class. Then have students make sentences using the example sentences as a model. Finally, have students correct the text in pairs.
2. Reading and writing about world cuisine
1a: Start brainstorming famous world dishes – have students shout out dishes and write them on the board. Then have students work in pairs to read the texts and guess the country of each dish. Finally, students match up the countries, nationalities and photos with the texts.
1b: Students check their answers. Then have students work in pairs to discuss and make notes about food and dishes from their countries. Finally, have students write their texts. When finished, have each student stand up and read their texts. Encourage their classmates to ask questions.
