Classroom objects and spelling things
This lesson builds on the classroom objects your ESL kids learned in the previous lesson. Your students will practice asking and answering questions, spelling and using the phonetic chart for saying letters of the alphabet. They also discuss the alphabet in their own language.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Spelling things, saying and writing the alphabet, describing objects with [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us], asking personal questions.
Structures: “How do you spell that?”, “How do you pronounce that?”, “What [hide_on_uk]color[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colour[/hide_on_us] is it?”, “Where are you from?”, “What’s your address?”, Yes, I am / No, I’m not.
Key vocabulary: Different [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us], happy, address.
Grammar focus:
– Present simple singular and plurals (there is/are)
– Simple adjectives
– Using a phonetic chart
– Answering yes/no questions
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review names for things in the classroom
Students review the classroom objects they learned in the previous lesson. Have them practice asking and answering question in pairs and help out with pronunciation and word stress.
2. Spelling and phonetic alphabet
Students practice spelling and with emphasis on pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet.
1a: Your students are introduced to adjectives. Elicit and practice different [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us] – as a follow up, have students say the [hide_on_uk]colors[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]colours[/hide_on_us] of things in the classroom.
1b: Students learn and practice the phonetic sounds of the alphabet. Teach the phonetic sounds and then read out the alphabet as students complete the table.
1c: Go through the alphabet and sounds as a class. Then have students practice in pairs.
3. Asking questions and spelling
1d: In this section, students practice asking and answering questions with their classmates. For each question, have students follow up by asking for the spelling of the answers. Allow them to use their phonetic chart to help them.
End with the discussion questions – first in small groups and then as a class.
