Places and things you need
In this lesson students talk going to different places. They also discuss what clothes they need to wear there and the other things they need to take with them.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Learning about different places, talking about wearing different clothes, speaking about the things you have in your bag.
Structures: “Let’s get ready”, “I like to go to the beach”, “I am going to the skating rink”, “I need a hat, mittens, ice-skates and a jacket”, “What is in your bag?”, “I have sunglasses and a cap.”

Grammar focus:
– Using the present continuous to say where you are going

Your students will need:

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review winter vocabulary
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the winter items paying special attention to stress. Students then play a guessing game in pairs using the vocabulary items.
Review b: Chorus the winter activities paying special attention to stress. Students then play a miming game in pairs using the vocabulary items.
2. Places and clothes vocabulary
1a: Elicit / Teach the places from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.
In pairs, have students say where they like to go. Then ask everybody in the class to tell you.
1b: Elicit / Teach the clothing items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.
1c: Students check their answers. They then do the word search game to review the words on the page.
3. Reading and speaking – going to places and what to take there
2a: Students read the sentences and insert the missing place words. They then check their answers.
Finally, put students into pairs. One student says a place from the page and his/her partner (with book closed) tries to say the sentence for that place. Do for all 4 places and they swap roles.
2b: Chorus the 6 places and list of vocabulary items. Students then match the items to the places. Check answers as a class.
Next, have pairs play a guessing game – one student says imaginary items in their bag and his/her partner has to guess where they are going.
