Food and drink
In this lesson students learn the words for many food and drink items. They read about a local market and compile a food and drink quiz for their classmates to take.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Saying the names of food and drink, reading about a local market, making questions for a food quiz.
Structures: “What food do / don’t you like?”, What’s your [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] food?”, “What did you have for breakfast / lunch / dinner?”.
Key vocabulary: soup, meat, milkshake, toast, salmon, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, [hide_on_uk]cookie[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]biscuit[/hide_on_us], [hide_on_uk]yogurt[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]yoghurt[/hide_on_us], lettuce, pasta, rice, cheese, salad, butter, watermelon, coffee, onion, carrot, lemon, apple, grape, melon, orange, potato, garlic, cabbage, pineapple, banana, toast, chicken, pizza.
Grammar focus:
– Asking questions with “which” in the present simple.
Your students will need:

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review daily routines vocabulary
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the daily routines vocabulary paying special attention to the underlined stress and 3rd person “s”. Students then practice saying sentences about their daily routines with a partner.
2. Food and drink vocabulary
1a: Start with the pictures and encourage students to say the food and drink names in English. Then chorus the vocabulary items. Students the work in pairs to match the words to the pictures.
1b: Students check their answers.
1c: Students do the word search in pairs. Encourage everybody to do it without checking the words on the previous page. Finally, students check their answers on the back page.
1d: Chorus the questions. Then have pairs ask each other the questions. Finally, go around the class asking students to report back on their partners’ answers.
3. Food shopping lists, reading about a market
2a: Students work in pairs to correct the shopping lists. Then have students talk about the food photos. Elicit vocabulary and write a list on the board of all the items.
2b: Students take turns reading the text in pairs. They then answer the questions. Finally, check as a class.
4. Food and drink quiz
2c: Have students work in pairs to read and answer the quiz questions. Then check the answers as a class.
2d: Students make their own quiz questions. In pairs or small groups, have them follow the instructions to compile their quizzes. After checking everyone’s questions, mix up the groups so students can play their quizzes.
