Toys and furniture / Prepositions of place
In this lesson students talk about finding things in their room. They learn words and phrases for toys and furniture, practice using the prepositions “on“, “in” and “under” and read and write about describing a room.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Saying the names of furniture and toys, saying where something is using on, in, under, reading about and describing a room.
Structures: “Where is my game console?”, “The skateboard is under the bed”, “There are two pillows in the room”.

– Using prepositions of location to ask and say where things are.
Your students will need:

1. Review kitchen and cooking vocabulary
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the kitchen items paying special attention to stress. Students then practice describing their kitchens with a partner.
Review b: Chorus the cooking verbs. Students then play a guessing game with a partner using food items and cooking verbs.
2. Toys and furniture vocabulary
1a: Try to elicit some of the toys and furniture items from the pictures. Then chorus the vocabulary and have students match to the pictures.
1b: Students check their answers. They then categorize the words into toys and furniture. Finally, students list the things that are in their room. Have them add other items not in this lesson and share with the class.
1c: Students unscramble the words and match to the pictures.
3. Grammar – prepositions of place
1d: Chorus the prepositions phrases. Then have students make sentences about items in the classroom with the prepositions “on”, “in” and “under”. Write them on the board.
4. Reading and writing – describing a room
2a: Have students read the text in pairs and underline the different toys and furniture mentioned.
2b: Students answer the true or false statements from the text on the previous page and then check their answers.
2c: Have students draw a picture of their bedroom. Then have them write a text about their room based on the model text. Finally, students read their texts to the class.
