Daily routines (1)
In this lesson students talk about their daily routines. They practice describing their school routine and say 4 times of the day. They also read about an animal’s daily routine.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Saying 4 times of the day, saying what time you do daily routines, describing your school routine, reading about an animal’s daily routine.
Structures: “I (brush my teeth) at (half past seven) (in the morning)”, “I (do classwork) every day”, ”Do you play outside at breaktimes?”, “I don’t play outside at breaktimes”.
Key vocabulary: (in the) morning, (in the) afternoon, (in the evening), (at) night, brush my teeth, get dressed, have lunch, go to sleep, do classwork, read coursebooks, work at my desk, write texts, talk to my classmates, ask my teacher, play outside, tidy the classroom, go home, do homework, walk to school, get the bus, finish quickly, draw a picture.
Grammar focus:
– Using the present simple for daily routines.
– Using “do” ask Yes/No questions (Do you brush your teeth?) and to create negatives (I don’t brush my teeth after lunch”).
– Using the 3rd person “s” (She plays outside).
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

Read a text about what puffins do each day
1. Review school subjects, times of the day
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the school subject vocabulary paying special attention to the underlined stress. Finish with the questions, to do in pairs or small groups.
Review b: First, practice times with a clock. Then, chorus the 4 times of the days phrases and match the activities wit the picture. Finish by making sentences with the activity and time of the day.
2. Daily routines – reading and grammar
1a: Have students read the text and guess what the missing verb is. Then have them put the verbs into the blanks.
1b: Students check their answers. Then have pair take turns in reading the text, The same pairs ask each other the questions. Do a final check as a class.
1c: Read through the present simple text as a class. Then give 2 minutes to memorize the table. Have everyone turn over the page and elicit the same table as you write it on the board. Have students create their own table in their notebooks using their own ideas. Finish with the text.
1d: Students check their answers. They then read the text in pairs by following the instructions.
3. Reading – Peter the puffin
2a: Your students are going to read a text about a puffin’s daily routine. Have students work in pairs to put the sentences in the right order. Then have them underline all the verbs in the text.
2b: Students check their answers. Then have everyone read the text with their partners.
