Rules with ‘must’ and ‘mustn’t’

In this lesson students explain rules at an at a ski resort with the modals “must” and “mustn’t“. They also learn vocabulary for winter and talk about what they like to do when it snows.

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review amusement park vocabulary and the modal verb ‘must’

Students review the previous lesson.

Review a: Chorus the amusement park items paying special attention to stress. Students then discuss in pairs where they like to go at the amusement park, using the example as a model.

Review b: In pairs, students need to come up with 5 sentences with the modal verb ‘must’ to say what they must do every day. Allow a few minutes. Then write the sentences on the board. Do the same for for part “B” – rules at school.

2. Winter vocabulary

1a: Elicit / Teach the winter activity verb phrases from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.

Students then discuss what they like to do in winter. Write the answers on the board. Allow different winter activities not listed on the page.

1b: Elicit / Teach the winter vocabulary items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.

1c: Students check their answers. They then play a game to review the words on the page.

3. Grammar – rules with “must” and “mustn’t”

2a: Chorus the sentences with the modal verb “mustn’t”. Point out the difference between “must” and “mustn’t”. Then have students say other things they mustn’t do every day. Write them on the board.

2b: Have students, in pairs, read the sentences about rules at a ski resort and put in the correct form of “must”.

They then check their answers on the next page.

4. Speaking – rules on winter days

2c: Chorus the winter activities and vocabulary. Read the question at the top of the page: “Say what you like to do on winter days. Say what you must and mustn’t do.” Then chorus the example conversation.

Put students into pairs and have them discuss their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] winter activities and using the correct form of “must”, using the example conversation as a model.

Finally, have pairs stand up and say part of their conversation with the class.
