In this lesson students explain rules at an amusement park with the modal “must“. They also learn vocabulary for amusement parks and say their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] ride.

Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Learning words on the topic of amusement parks, speaking about [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] rides, explaining rules with “must”.
Structures: “It is very high.”, “You must wash your hands.”
Key vocabulary: roller coaster, swings, water slide, [hide_on_uk]line[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]queue[/hide_on_us], bumper cars, arcade games, haunted house, snack stand, gate, ticket booth, map, Ferris wheel.
Grammar focus:
– Using adjectives to describe rides
– Using the modal “must” to explain rules
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. Learn how to explain rules with “must”
Write a list of rules for an amusement park
1. Review food and prepositions
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the food items paying special attention to stress. Students then do a word search puzzle to find some of those words.
2. Amusement park vocabulary
1a: Elicit / Teach the amusement park items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.
1b: Students check their answers. They then play a game to review the words on the page.
3. Amusement park quiz
2a: Students are going to answer questions to find our which their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] ride at an amusement park is. Have students work in pairs to ask each other the questions and record their answers.
2b: Students now total up their answers and read what their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] ride should be. Then have the pairs discuss this and talk about their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] rides.
Finally, go around the class asking about their [hide_on_uk]favorite[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]favourite[/hide_on_us] rides and their reasons why.
4. Grammar – rules with “must”
3a: Chorus the sentences. Then have students say other things they must do every day. Write them on the board.
3b: Have students, in small groups, brainstorm rules for an amusement park. Then have them write a “rule sheet” using the model text.
Finally, have each group present their rules to the class.
