Present continuous
In this lesson students practice using the present continuous to say what people are wearing at a costume party. They learn words for costumes, read about a party and say what they are wearing.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Learning about different costumes, using the present continuous to say what you are wearing.
Structures: “I am wearing a mask”, “We are drinking juice”, “Are you wearing a cape?”
Key vocabulary: mask, wig, feather, wing, sword, magic wand, cape, shield, gloves.
Grammar focus:
– Using the present continuous to say what you are wearing and doing
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review places and clothes vocabulary
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the places and clothes items paying special attention to stress. Students then play a guessing game in pairs using the vocabulary items.
2. Costumes vocabulary
1a: Elicit / Teach the costume items from the pictures. Then have students work together in pairs to match the words to the pictures.
1b: Students check their answers. Then students, in pairs, test each other by playing a drawing game.
3. Grammar and reading – using the present continuous to say what you are wearing
1c: Chorus the sentences and the grammar table. Pay special attention to the different forms of ‘to be’ (am / is / are) and the ‘ing’ verb ending.
Then have pairs make sentences about the clothes they, and their classmates, are wearing. Ask for some sentences and write them on the board.
2a: Students read the text about a party and fill in the blanks with the correct form of ‘to be’.
2b: Students check their answers. Then, in pairs, they match the names to the pictures of children.
4. Speaking – saying what you are wearing at a party
2c: Chorus the vocabulary words and example sentences.
Then have pairs play the game: Student A chooses a person picture and Student B has to ask yes/no questions to find who that person is.
Have students match up with different partners to play again. Circulate and listen for mistakes and help with any vocabulary and grammar.
