Fun ESL phonics classroom game
Try this lively “Cluster sound challenge” to get students listening for and saying vowel and consonant clusters.
Choose a list of words that include a variety of vowel clusters (e.g., ai, ea, oo, oi) and consonant clusters (e.g., th, sh, st, ch). Divide the class into teams. Say (or display) a target cluster such as “st” or “oo.” Teams take turns calling out a word that contains that cluster. For example, for “st” they might say “stop,” “star,” “fast.” If the word is correct, the team earns a point. If a team hesitates or gives an incorrect example, the turn passes to the other team.
