Fun ESL motor skills classroom activity

Try this simple “Line & Shape challenge” to help students build the fine motor control they need for confident writing.

Give each student a blank sheet of paper. On the board, draw a quick sequence of lines and shapes — for example: zig-zag → straight line → circle → spiral → wave. Students watch carefully, then try to copy the sequence onto their own paper, keeping the lines smooth and controlled. After one round, erase the lines and draw a new pattern, slightly more complex. Students compare their work with a partner and choose their “best line” from the paper.
