Fun ESL ability activity

Try this simple classroom activity to get students using can” and “can’t”.

Put students in pairs and give each pair a list of ability actions (from the worksheets). Students take turns asking and answering, “Can you… swim / whistle / touch your toes?” The partner must respond and demonstrate if possible: “Yes, I can!” or “No, I can’t.”
After the interview, each student writes a short report about their partner: “Hannah can whistle but she can’t skip.” This leads naturally into completing the worksheets.
