Try this simple “National food map” weekly activity to help students learn country and nationality words.
You need a world map on the classroom wall. Each week, assign one of the countries on the map to each student. Their homework is to do some research find out a popular dish from that country (e.g. Italy – pizza, Japan – sushi, USA – hotdog, etc.). Then in the next class have students bring their answers as small drawings of the food to stick to the map. As you do this have a chat with each student, for example, “Mei, what do you have?”, “I have pizza from Italy. Pizza is an Italian dish”. Do this each week, each time getting more and more difficult with countries your students don’t know!
