Fun ESL measuring classroom activity

Try this “Measure & compare” game to get students measuring things.

Have each student write down 10 things in the classroom on different slips of paper (e.g. book, pencil, notebook, desk, door, etc.) and then screw up each paper slip. Match up students into pairs and make sure each pair has a ruler to measure with. Students take turns to open a slip of paper and then measure the length of the object – writing the length on the paper slip (e.g. “The pencil is 16 cm long.”). When everyone has finished, have the pairs put their paper slips in order of size, from longest to shortest. Then ask each pair to say a comparison sentence, such as, “The table is longer than the stapler”.
