Fun ESL health and sickness activity

Try this “Doctor-Patient role play” game to get students saying health vocabulary in conversation.

Divide students into pairs and assign roles: one is the doctor, the other is the patient. Give each pair a simple scenario (e.g., a sore throat, a headache, a stomachache). The patient describes how they feel using basic health words: “My head hurts.”, “I have a sore throat.” The doctor listens and asks simple follow-up questions: “When did it start?”, “Does it hurt here?”.

Then the doctor gives basic advice using future or modal language:
“You should drink water.”, “You shouldn’t eat too much sugar.”

After a few minutes, students switch roles with a new scenario. For extra practice, have a few pairs act out their conversation for the class.
