Games and activities for teaching “Directions” to ESL kids
Blindfold course
Make an obstacle course in your classroom (use desks, chairs, etc.), put a blindfold on a student and help guide him/her through the course by giving instructions (e.g. walk forward 2 steps, turn left, take on small step, etc.). This is a good pair game.
Directions lesson plan
We have a FREE lesson plan on using left / right / forward / back which includes games and activities as well as other lesson materials.

Directions song
We have a song available for download focusing on using left / right / forward / back called “The directions song“. It is a high energy, action song – great fun!
Town directions
Build a model of a town, including some streets and buildings (use Lego and toys). Use a radio controlled car and give the controller to different students (they can take it in turns). Practice directions, e.g. drive two blocks and turn right, go forward and back, and so on. (Submitted by Francisco Amador)
Train ride game
Have students form a train (standing in line holding onto each other). Choo-choo around the classroom and call out instructions (e.g. faster, slower, turn left/right, stop, go).
