Pronouns and personal details

This lesson focuses on asking questions about personal details and giving appropriate answers. Your students will also learn how to use different pronouns and practice asking wh questions.

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

Read about penguins

1. Review the letters of the English alphabet

Students review the letters of the alphabet paying attention to the phonetic sound of each letter. They also practice spelling words.

2. Find out about penguins

Students read some texts about penguins. The focus is on describing the abilities and personal details of penguins, using pronouns and asking wh question.

1a: Students read a poem about a penguin called Polly. Have pairs read out loud to each other – work on pronunciation issues.

1b: Pronouns are introduced. Have students read the first text about Peter and then complete the text about Polly.

1c: Students practice asking and answering questions about Polly the Penguin and complete a text. They then speak about Peter the Penguin, giving personal details.

3. Reading for specific details

2a: Students read some factual texts about penguins in order to answer questions. Start by asking the class to speculate on the questions at the bottom of the page. Then have pairs read together to find the answers.

Finally, go through the answers as a class on the last page.
