Places and geographical features
In this lesson students identify capital cities and geographical features and matching countries to continents. The also read a text about a country for specific information.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Identifying capital cities and geographical features, matching countries to continents, reading a text about a country for specific information.
Structures: “Which countries can you see?”, “Which country / continent do you live in?”.
Key vocabulary: forests, rivers, sea, mountains, prairies, coasts, lakes, island, capital city, continent, population, small, vast, huge, high, spectacular, long, big.
Grammar focus:
– Present simple questions and statements
– Simple adjectives for describing a geographic features
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook
- [hide_on_uk]colored[/hide_on_uk][hide_on_us]coloured[/hide_on_us] pencils
For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

Read about a large country
1. Review there is/are, places in a town and nations
Students review the previous lesson.
Review a: Chorus the sentences then have students make sentences about things in places.
Review b: Have students, in pairs, read the text to each other. Then have them talk about their hometown using the text as a model.
Review c: Students say the countries of the flags and then add the capital city and adjective to each country,
2. Saying geographical features of a country
Students learn about Canada.
1a: Students answer the question about Canada’s flag and then read the text. Have students work in pairs to match the photos of geographical features to the words.
1b: Chorus the geographical features and answer the questions.
3. Saying continents and countries
1c: Chorus the countries and continents. Have students match the countries to the continents. Then answer the questions for the map.
1d: Have students located the countries on the map. When eliciting the answers, also ask which continent each country is in. Finally, have students discuss the two questions in pairs and then as a class.
4. Reading about a country
1e: Have your students, in pairs, take turns in reading the text to each other. Then have them cover the text and answer the questions.
When finished, check the answers as a class.
