Describing your home
In this lesson students say the rooms of a house and describe their homes. They also read and write about their homes.

Age: 9-12 years
Time: 1 hour – 1 hour 30 mins
Objectives: Saying the rooms of a house, describing your home, reading and writing about homes.
Structures: “Is there (an attic)?”, “Are there any (bedrooms)?”, There is/are …”, “on the (first) floor”, There are (four) people living in my home.
Key vocabulary: home, house, apartment, living room, hall, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, attic, yard, landing, laundry room, toilet, balcony, terrace, stairs, garage, ground floor, 1st ~10th floor,
Grammar focus:
– Present simple “to be” questions (Is there a/an, Are there any?”)
Your students will need:
- a pen
- a pencil
- a notebook

For this level 4 course, use either the PDF mini-textbooks – print out copies for each student, or if you have a projector or large screen you can use PowerPoint lessons. In both cases, follow the lesson through as it appears in the materials. The lesson is self-explanatory, and there are additional teaching notes below.

1. Review action verbs and ability
Students review the action verbs from last lesson. They also practice asking “Can you” yes/no questions.
2. Rooms vocabulary
Students learn about the rooms of a house.
1a: Chorus the rooms and have pairs ask each other the questions.
3. Asking “Is there / Are there any” questions
1b (A): Teach students the difference between asking “Is there” (when only one is expected) and “Are there any” (when more than one is expected). Students then write the rooms in the correct column.
1b (B): Chorus the conversation and check that everyone understands the ordinal numbers for floors (1st, 2nd, 3rd). Students in pairs practice asking and answering questions about the rooms.
4. Describing and writing about your home
1c: Have students draw a picture of their home, labeling the rooms. Allow them to add more room vocabulary to the picture. Students then ask each other about their homes using the structures from the previous page.
1d: Have students in pairs read through the text. Then, using the text as a model, have them write about their homes.
When finished, have students display and read their texts.
